Blackmoor¶
The Obsidian Marshes
Description¶
A cursed region where the gods fought their final battle, the Obsidian Marshes are teeming with magical anomalies. The land is a maze of blackened swamps, jagged volcanic rock, and unnervingly quiet pools. This eerie and unstable environment holds great peril but also conceals ancient power. The Empire claims it as a strategic borderland due to its potential for celestial magic research and the protection of the Celestial Tablet, a keystone of divine power and influence.
Inhabitants¶
- Umbrics: The dominant population — they harness the region’s magical anomalies to adapt and survive where others cannot.
- Crisael enclaves persist in the deeper marshes, operating under the protection of the Thousand-Petal Court. Their crystalline forms let them traverse the unstable terrain, blending with the ethereal energy.
- Few outsiders venture into Blackmoor willingly — those who do tend to be researchers chasing forbidden knowledge, exiles with nowhere left to go, or fugitives betting that the marshes will kill their pursuers before it kills them.
- Creatures: Crystal-Spiders and the invisible Void-Stalkers.
Key Settlements¶
- Gloom-End: A miserable Imperial penal garrison.
- The Shards: A mobile, hidden Crisael rebel camp.
Mystical Features¶
- The Celestial Tablet: Hidden within the marshes, tied to the Heavens’ Covenant and guarded by the Warden of Echoes, a fragmented remnant of Solphirion’s consciousness.
- Stormward Pools: Pools of dark water that reflect not just the present but glimpses of possible futures, risking the sanity of those who peer into them.
Location¶
Southeast of Velmere, near Kaelroch. Unlike the stable plains, its eerie nature makes it a frontier region connecting to the Borderlands.
