The Magic System: The Resonance¶
Magic in Kaelara is not infinite. It is a resource, and it is running out.
The Source: The Astral Veil¶
Magic is the act of drawing energy from the Astral Veil — the barrier that separates the Mortal Plane from the Void.
- Leylines: Rivers of invisible energy that flow through the world, distributing this power.
- The Covenant: The “Dam” that regulates the flow.
The Mechanics¶
1. Casting (Attunement)¶
To cast a spell, a mage must “Resonate” with a Leyline.
- Auriels: Use chants and songs to harmonize with the flow.
- Umbrics: Use blood and emotion to force the flow.
- Alchemists: Use Erythium crystals as batteries to store the flow.
2. The Cost: Veil-Sickness¶
Because the Covenant is weakening, the Veil is thin and “tearing.” Drawing magic now comes with a physical price.
- Minor Casts: Cause fatigue, migraines, and nosebleeds.
- Major Casts: Can cause Veil-Sickness.
- Symptoms: The skin begins to crack (similar to the Crisael condition). The eyes bleed liquid light. Eventually, the mage “unravels,” turning into a mindless conduit of raw energy.
The Schools of Magic (The Five Pillars)¶
The Imperial Academy strictly teaches these five grounded disciplines. All others are considered “Wild Magic” or Heresy. For details on magical training, licensing, and the Sanctum’s oversight process, see Education.

Warding (The Shield Pillar)
- Focus: Protection, Banishment, Counter-Magic.
- Role: Creating shields for the Silver Legion and stabilizing volatile Erythium.

Destruction (The Flame Pillar)
- Focus: Elemental energy (Fire, Frost, Lightning) harnessed for combat.
- Role: Artillery for the Legion. Highly regulated; unauthorized use is a capital offense.

Seeing (The Eye Pillar)
- Focus: Information gathering, sensing magic, limited foresight.
- Role: Used by Justiciars to track rogue mages and uncover plots.

Shaping (The Hand Pillar)
- Focus: Physical manipulation of matter, mending materials, transmutation.
- Role: Construction, repair, and industry (closely tied to the Iron-Guilds).

Mending (The Heart Pillar)
- Focus: Healing wounds, curing disease, purifying toxins.
- Role: Vital for keeping the Legion fighting and the populace healthy. Note: Cannot cure Veil-Sickness, only delay it.
The Taboo: Unbinding¶
The ultimate crime is Unbinding — destroying matter to create energy (nuclear fission, essentially).
- It creates a “Dead Zone” where magic can never return.
- It is believed that the Severith seek to Unbind the entire world.
