Crystal-Spider¶
Region: Blackmoor Type: Construct / Artificial Danger Level: ⭐⭐ (Dangerous in Swarms)
Description¶
Artificial horrors created by the Thousand-Petal Court to guard their conclaves. They are jagged constructs made of animated amethyst, roughly the size of a large dog.
Behavior¶
They are trap-door predators. They burrow into the marsh soil, leaving only their crystal backs exposed to look like harmless geode deposits. When prey steps close, they erupt.
Abilities¶
- Calcifying Bite: Their venom turns flesh into crystal. A victim will slowly petrify over 24 hours unless treated with a specialized alchemical solvent.
- Web of Glass: They spin webs of ultra-thin glass filaments that are nearly invisible and can slice through leather armor.
- Shatter-Death: When killed, they explode into razor-sharp shrapnel.
Weakness¶
- Blunt Force: Their crystalline bodies are brittle under heavy impacts. Maces and hammers work where blades fail.
- Extreme Cold: Rapid temperature drops make the amethyst structure fracture along its seams.
Folklore¶
Children in Blackmoor’s border villages learn the rhyme early:
Pretty stone, pretty stone, sitting in the mud, Pick it up, it picks you back — now your hand is blood.
Hunters in the marshes have a simpler rule: if a rock looks like it does not belong, it does not. Walk around it. Walk far around it. An old trapper’s warning, passed between guides for generations, goes: “If the geode is warm, run. If the geode moves, pray.”
First Encounter¶
The earliest recorded encounter comes from a Justiciar patrol report, dated 4A 611. Sergeant Bennic Roe’s squad was mapping an abandoned Thousand-Petal Court conclave site in the eastern marshes when Private Dahl kicked what he thought was a loose amethyst cluster. Roe’s report is dry, clinical, military — until the last paragraph: “Dahl’s boot struck the formation and it unfolded. That is the word I keep coming back to. It unfolded. Eight legs, each one a blade. It was on him before he finished screaming. We killed it with mace-strikes, but when it died, the shrapnel took Dahl’s left hand and put three shards through my shield. We found nine more formations between us and the extraction point. We did not kick any of them.”
Lore Context¶
The Thousand-Petal Court deploys Crystal-Spiders as perimeter defenses around their hidden conclaves in the Obsidian Marshes. Justiciar patrols have learned to treat geode-like formations in Blackmoor’s marshland with extreme caution — more than one squad has been shredded by a nest they mistook for mineral deposits. The spiders are not natural creatures but alchemical constructs, animated through a process the Court guards jealously. When a conclave is abandoned, the spiders left behind continue their patrol indefinitely, making old Court sites as dangerous as active ones.
Harvested Materials¶
- Refined Amethyst: Valuable gem.
- Venom Sac: Used to create “Stasis Potions.”
