Kraken-Spawn

Region: Ravance (Deep Trenches) Type: Monstrosity Danger Level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Catastrophic)

Description

Lesser tendrils of the deep gods, resembling giant squids with armored mantles. They are strong enough to crush a small frigate. Their shells are ridged with bony plates that deflect harpoons, and their eyes — each the size of a wagon wheel — glow a dull phosphorescent green in deep water. The largest recorded specimen stretched nearly eighty meters from beak to tentacle tip.

Abilities

  • Ink-Cloud: Releases a cloud of magical darkness that blocks vision and scrying.
  • Crushing Grip: Tentacles can grapple and crush ship hulls.

Behavior

Kraken-Spawn are ambush predators that inhabit the deep trenches off the Ravance coast, particularly the waters around the Abyssal Maw. They hunt by drifting upward from the deep at dusk, trailing their tentacles beneath shipping lanes to snag prey. They are largely solitary — two Kraken-Spawn in the same trench will fight until one retreats or dies. When feeding, they drag their catch down to crushing depth rather than eating at the surface. Sailors who have survived encounters report that they seem to test a ship first, wrapping a single tentacle around the hull before committing to a full attack. Ships that cut the tentacle quickly are sometimes left alone.

Weakness

  • Lightning: Electrical discharge through water stuns them and forces a retreat to deeper water.
  • Shallow Water: They are clumsy and slow near the surface. A Kraken-Spawn driven into shallows loses most of its crushing advantage.

Lore Context

In recent years, Kraken-Spawn have been surfacing in waters far shallower than their usual range. Fishermen near Abyss-Watch have spotted them in harbor approaches where they have no business being. Tirael elders tie this to the weakening of the Veil — the deep trenches sit above Leyline convergences, and the fraying Covenant is agitating things that were content to stay below. The Crimson Compact has turned this to their advantage. Compact captains have learned that dumping offal and blood into the water at specific coordinates can lure Kraken-Spawn toward Imperial shipping lanes. The Armada has lost three supply convoys this year to “natural” attacks that were nothing of the sort. The Empire suspects sabotage but cannot prove it.

Harvested Materials

  • Beak: Harder than steel, used in siege weapons.
  • Deep-Ink: Used for writing scrolls that cannot be erased.
