Glossary of Kaelara

A quick-reference guide to the key terms, materials, and concepts of The Heavens’ Covenant.

A

Arbiters

The three judges of the High Tribunal in Valtharion. Appointed by the Throne, serve for life. Always Auriels. Their verdicts cannot be appealed.

Astral Veil

The metaphysical barrier that separates the Mortal Plane from the Void. Magic is drawn through it. The Veil is weakening in the current age, causing Veil-Sickness and celestial anomalies.

Auriel

Golden-skinned elves native to Velmere. The ruling race of the Empire of Eldara. Currently suffering the Fading Bloodline — a collapse in birth rates tied to the weakening Covenant.

B

Binding Quill

The divine tool used to inscribe the Heavens’ Covenant. Forged from a shard of the Infinite Spire. Its power allows the user to rewrite localized truth. Currently lost.

Blind Walkers

Massive sandstorms in Zarnath that move against the prevailing wind, as if guided. They leave behind fused glass in patterns resembling old Veil-script.

C

Celestial Accordance

A rare cosmic event when the moons Nythra and Ceylir align with the Infinite Spire. Occurs roughly every thousand years. Marks the transition between Ages.

Celestial Essence

Liquid form of pure divine energy, collected from the Astral Veil during a Celestial Accordance. One of the two components used to create the Heavens’ Covenant.

Cindralium

An explosive volcanic ore mined in Kaelroch. Used in alchemical fuel and enchantments. Dangerous to handle.

Codex Solaris

The Empire’s foundational legal document. Written during the Age of Conquest, organized into five pillars: Order, Commerce, Faith, Blood, and Shadow. Over twelve thousand pages in High Auriel. See Imperial Law.

Common Tavren

The trade language of the Empire, derived from Old Auriel. Every Imperial subject is expected to speak it. Written in Solarian Script.

Covenant

See: Heavens’ Covenant.

Covenari

The Seven Covenanted. Divine entities who swore the Heavens’ Covenant to preserve reality. They sacrificed their ability to directly intervene in the Mortal Plane in exchange for cosmic stability. The seven: Solphirion, Lunarae, Othea, Aenior, Ignifer, Oroth, and Velion-Kael.

Crimson Compact

A maritime republic and intelligence network operating out of Port-Siren in Ravance. Evolved from the Crimson Corsairs pirate fleet into a multi-racial confederation governed by the Salt Table. Motto: “The sea has no emperor.”

Crisael

Crystalline-skinned elves transformed from Sylvaels during the Violation of the Grove. Legally barred from testifying, owning property, or exposing their skin in Imperial cities.

Crucible (The)

The Iron-Guilds’ training academy in Ironridge. Trains engineers, metallurgists, and Erythium artificers. Operates outside Imperial educational oversight.

Crucible-Home

The largest Emberkin settlement, built inside a dormant caldera on the Ember Spine. Site of the Soot-Moot seasonal council.

D

Dead Zone

An area where Unbinding has occurred. Magic cannot return to a Dead Zone. The Shattered Highlands of Ironridge contain several.

E

Erythium

A luminous crystalline ore with red and gold hues. The backbone of the Empire’s economy and magical infrastructure. Deposits are dwindling. Mining and trade controlled by the Iron-Guilds.

Erythium Shards

Raw Erythium crystals used as unofficial currency among mages and on the black market. Illegal to trade without an Imperial License.

F

Empress Lyssara Valenwyth

The reigning Empress of Eldara and last direct descendant of the Avarion Dynasty. Unmarried, no heir. Her death will end the bloodline that has ruled the Empire since 3A 1. See Legendary Figures.

Fenrik Ashvane

First non-Auriel Guild-Master in the Iron-Guilds. Negotiated the Ironridge Compact preventing the Empire from nationalizing Erythium production. Still alive and active. See Legendary Figures.

Fading Bloodline (The)

The Auriel fertility crisis. Auriel biology is woven into the Astral Veil — their golden skin, longevity, and fertility depend on stable Veil energy. As the Covenant weakens, the resonance required for conception becomes erratic. Fewer children each generation, each one frailer. The Empire’s darkest secret.

Five Pillars (The)

The five sanctioned disciplines of magic: Warding (protection), Destruction (combat), Seeing (detection), Shaping (transmutation), Mending (healing). All other magic is classified as Wild Magic or heresy.

G

Golden Haze

A faint, warm shimmer visible at dawn in Velmere during Suncrest and Highsun. A manifestation of the Veil’s influence on the capital’s atmosphere. Growing dimmer each year.

Great Wolf (The)

The central deity of Vaeryn mythology. A being they claim breathed the world into existence, predating the Covenari. Whether the Great Wolf is a Primordial, a misremembered aspect of Othea, or something older remains an unsolved mystery. The Empire classifies its worship as heresy.

H

Heavens’ Covenant

Both a metaphysical force and a physical artifact (the Celestial Tablet). Created by Solphirion during the Shattering Age to bind the gods and prevent their direct interference in the Mortal Plane. Currently weakening. The tablet is located in the Obsidian Marshes, guarded by the Warden of Echoes.

High Auriel (Aur’thalis)

The ceremonial language of the Auriel nobility. Used in the Codex Solaris, court proceedings, and the Auriel Academy entrance exam. A deliberate gatekeeping tool.

Hollow (The)

A blight spreading through Havenwood’s forests. Trees rot from the inside out — bark intact, heartwood turned to black powder. Bloom cycles are drifting out of alignment.

I

Ice-Steel

A cryo-material forged in Caldrith using “Frost-Forging” — tempering steel with extreme cold rather than fire. Developed out of necessity in a land without fuel.

Iora Doctrine

A Codex Solaris provision named for Saint Iora. Forbids the arrest of a healer while they are treating a patient, regardless of the patient’s legal status.

Imperial Coin

The standardized gold currency of the Empire. Backed by the Imperial Erythium Reserve. Features the current ruler’s profile and Solphirion’s Sun-Scale.

Imperial Sanctum

The Empire’s magical regulatory body. Headquartered in Valtharion with regional offices in every province. Controls licensing, training, and oversight of all legal mages.

Infinite Spire

A non-Euclidean structure outside physical space. Houses the godly realms (Solphirion’s Pinnacle at the top, Othea’s Roots below, Malakor’s Abyss at the foundation).

Ironridge Compact

The agreement negotiated by Fenrik Ashvane that prevents the Empire from nationalizing Erythium production. The Guilds’ primary guarantee of independence.

Iron-Guilds

The technocratic oligarchy that controls Erythium mining, refining, and manufacturing. Based in Ironridge. Technically imperial subjects, practically independent due to economic leverage.

J

Jorvak Blood-Eye

War-chief of the largest Vaeryn clan federation and de facto ruler of Frost-Hold. Has united more clans than anyone since the original subjugation. Waiting for the Empire to weaken before striking. See Legendary Figures.

K

Kalstrom, Reva (Admiral)

Tirael commander who broke the first Crimson Compact blockade of Ravance in 4A 389. Established the Azure Lane as a secure trade route. Celebrated by the Empire, despised by the Compact. See Legendary Figures.

L

Leylines

Rivers of invisible magical energy that flow through the world, distributing power from the Astral Veil. Weakening in the current age.

M

Mark of Shame

A magical brand on the forearm, applied as punishment for serious crimes. Glows faintly, cannot be removed. The branded cannot enter Imperial buildings, hold property, or testify in court.

N

Nexus Void

The churning engine of creation at the center of the Astral Veil. Where souls are “recycled” — memories and personality stripped, raw magical energy reused. Not a place of judgment.

Nythra

The blue moon. Governs magical tides. A full Nythra (“Blue Zenith”) makes magic potent but volatile. Believed to be the physical heart of Lunarae.

P

Pillar of Necessity

The unwritten sixth pillar of the Codex Solaris. Allows the Throne to override any law in the name of Imperial security. Never formally codified because acknowledging it would undermine the other five pillars.

Q

Quill of Velion

An honorary title granted to scholars who complete a perfect transcription of a major work in the Archives of Velion. Copying a book by hand is considered an act of devotion to Velion-Kael.

R

Reckoning (The)

The Tirael name for the monsoon season in Ravance (Harvestshade through Snowtide). Three months of driving rain and seas too rough for anything smaller than a war-galley.

Resonance

The act of casting magic. A mage “resonates” with a Leyline to draw energy through the Astral Veil. Different races attune differently — Auriels use chants, Umbrics use blood and emotion, alchemists use Erythium as batteries.

Resonance Detonation

A forbidden technique practiced by the Thousand-Petal Court’s Shard-Singers. A Crisael overcharges crystallized magic in a limb until it explodes into shrapnel. The limb regenerates over weeks.

S

Saga-Keepers

Vaeryn oral historians whose sole purpose is to memorize and recite the complete history of their clan. A senior Saga-Keeper can recite continuously for days.

Salt Table (The)

The governing council of the Crimson Compact. Seven captains elected by fleet vote. Decisions by majority, ties broken by coin flip.

Severith

The Nether-Lords. Divine entities who refused or were broken by the Heavens’ Covenant. Five active (Malakor, Karnath-Magar, Varia, Avaros, Nocnitsa), one dead (Valdris, consumed by Malakor), one unclassifiable (Eiron). Worship is illegal.

Shattering Age (1A)

The first age of Kaelara. Defined by The God War, the fracturing of continents, and the creation of the Heavens’ Covenant.

Solphirion’s Mark

An enchanted brand on the inner wrist identifying a mage as licensed by the Imperial Sanctum. Required for legal practice of magic.

Soot-Moot

The Emberkin seasonal council held at Crucible-Home. Disputes are settled, alliances formed, and alchemical knowledge shared among the clans.

Sungem

A radiant crystal found in Zarnath. Used for fire enchantments and heat-resistant crafting. A key Ashveil trade good.

T

Tel’vahr

Ashveili word for rain. Roughly translates to “the sky remembers.” Rain is so rare in Zarnath that its arrival stops all activity.

Testimony Hierarchy

The formal ranking of witness credibility in Imperial courts. Auriel testimony is considered inherently reliable. Mortal testimony requires corroboration. Beast-kin testimony requires two corroborators. Crisael testimony is inadmissible.

Thousand-Petal Court

A revolutionary movement originally founded as a mage-supremacist secret society. Co-opted by Crisael leadership and transformed into a spiritual movement seeking to “Crystallize” the world. Led by Thalveris the Shattered.

Tidewrit

Ravance’s independent maritime legal code governing harbor disputes, salvage rights, and piracy charges. Recognized by the Empire for maritime matters.

Trade-Bars

Stamped ingots of iron, copper, or silver. Used for bulk trade between Guilds and cities.

U

Unbinding

The ultimate magical crime. The destruction of matter to create energy — essentially nuclear fission through magic. Creates permanent Dead Zones.

V

Veil-Crackers

Electrical storms of increasing frequency in Blackmoor. Lightning strikes purple instead of white and leaves behind a smell of burnt copper. Where they hit, wildlife behaves strangely for days.

Veil-Sickness

A magical disease caused by drawing too much energy through the weakening Astral Veil. Symptoms progress from fatigue and nosebleeds to cracking skin, bleeding light, and complete unraveling. No cure exists.

Vent-Warrens

A network of lava tubes beneath eastern Kaelroch, converted into Emberkin living quarters and a hidden market beyond Imperial oversight.

Void-Combustion

An engine technology developed by the Iron-Guilds. Burns Erythium dust to produce anti-gravity lift. Powers the Empire’s airships.

Void-Salt

A dangerous magical reagent harvested in Blackmoor. Used in dark alchemy and forbidden rituals. Trade is heavily restricted.

W

Warden of Echoes

The entity that guards the Celestial Tablet in the Obsidian Marshes. Believed to be the fragmented consciousness of Solphirion.
