Languages of Kaelara¶
Kaelara has no universal language. The Empire enforces Common Tavren as the language of law, commerce, and education, but every race maintains its own tongue — some openly, some in secret. What follows are fragments. Most of these languages have never been fully documented by Imperial scholars, and their speakers are not always inclined to share.
Common Tavren (Imperial Standard)¶
The trade language of the Empire, derived from Old Auriel but simplified over centuries of use by non-Auriel populations. Every Imperial subject is expected to speak it. Most do, though accent and dialect vary wildly — a Tharun farmer and a Tirael sailor technically speak the same language but will struggle to understand each other.
Common Tavren uses the Solarian Script — a flowing alphabet developed by Auriel scribes and adopted Empire-wide during the Age of Conquest. Literacy rates are highest in Velmere and lowest in Caldrith, where the Vaeryns consider writing a poor substitute for memory.
High Auriel (Aur’thalis)¶
The ceremonial language of the Auriel nobility. The Codex Solaris is written in it. The Auriel Academy entrance exam is conducted in it. Court proceedings at the High Tribunal use it. It is, by design, a gatekeeping tool — those who speak it hold power, and the effort required to learn it ensures most non-Auriels never will.

- “Kael’mora” — “The world grieves.” Spoken at funerals.
Tharunic (Earthtongue)¶
The Tharun language is oral, rhythmic, and built for singing. Most Tharunic “texts” are actually harvest songs — long-form poems that encode history, farming knowledge, and genealogy into patterns that can be memorized and passed down. The language has no native written form. Imperial scholars have transcribed it using Solarian Script, but the Tharuns say this strips out the melody, which is half the meaning.
Root Words¶

- “Thar’ondal” — “The folk endure the season.” Said during hard winters or poor harvests.
- “Riv’grey” — “The water returns to the earth.” Spoken at burials, as the seed-cloth is laid.
Tirasong (Sea-Speech)¶
Tirael language is tonal and partially gestural — pitch, rhythm, and hand-sign carry as much meaning as the words themselves. This evolved from the need to communicate over the noise of wind and waves and beneath the water’s surface, where sound travels differently. A sentence spoken in flat monotone means something different from the same sentence sung with a rising inflection. Imperial scholars who try to transcribe Tirasong without noting the tonal contour produce gibberish.
Root Words¶
| Root | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| tir | tide, pulse, rhythm | Tir-ael (tide-people) |
| ael | people, kindred, school (as in fish) | Tir-ael, Sylv-ael |

Common Phrases¶
- “Tir’ael mar’cor” — “The tide-people follow the current.” A farewell, meaning “safe travels.”
- “Rav’sir” — “The deep sings.” Warning that a storm is coming — deep water produces a low hum before major weather shifts, and Tiraels can hear it.
- “Ael’nav” — “Kindred star.” A term of endearment between close friends or lovers.
Umbrish (Veil-Tongue)¶
The Umbric language is quiet, precise, and full of words for things that other languages have no names for — specific types of magical resonance, the texture of Leyline currents, the difference between twelve varieties of darkness. It has more words for “shadow” than Common Tavren has for “color.” Umbrish is whispered by habit. Umbrics rarely raise their voices, and their language reflects this — most words are soft consonants and long vowels.
Root Words¶
| Root | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| um | shadow, beneath, hidden | Um-bric (shadow-dwellers) |
| noc | night, dream, vision | Noc-nitsa (night-horror) |

- “Noc’um” — “Dream-shadow.” The state of lucid dreaming used in dream cartography.
Vaerik (Frost-Speech)¶
The Vaeryn language is harsh, guttural, and built for shouting across frozen valleys. It has no written form — the Vaeryns use Saga-Keepers to preserve their language orally, and they consider this superior to writing. Vaerik has extensive vocabulary for ice, wind, combat, and kinship, and almost no words for concepts like “compromise” or “negotiation.” The closest Vaerik equivalent to “diplomat” translates roughly as “the one who talks before the fighting starts.”
Root Words¶
| Root | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| vae | frost, endure, hard | Vae-ryn (frost-born) |
| ryn | born, blood, child | Vae-ryn (frost-born) |

Common Phrases¶
- “Vae’gar ryn” — “Frost-wolf blood.” A war cry. It claims descent from the Great Wolf.
- “Cal’drith skar” — “The ice-hold endures its scars.” A toast to survival.
- “Bren’ryn” — “Fire-born.” What Vaeryns call the first child born after a harsh winter, considered blessed.
Embertongue (Mol’kyr)¶
The Emberkin language is percussive and deep, built from sounds that carry through stone and over the roar of volcanic vents. Many words are felt as much as heard — low rumbles that vibrate in the chest. The language has no sibilants (no S, Z, or SH sounds), because these frequencies are swallowed by the ambient noise of Kaelroch. Emberkin communication over long distances uses rhythmic hammering on stone — a form of linguistic drumming that carries for miles through the lava tubes.
Root Words¶
| Root | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| mol | fire, forge, transform | Mol-thyr (fire-giants), Mol’kyr (fire-tongue) |
| kyr | word, voice, hammer-strike | Mol’kyr (fire-word) |
| em | glow, ember, life-heat | Em-berkin (glow-people) |
| cru | melt, shape, create | Cru-cible (shaping-place) |
| gor | stone, bone, permanent | Gor-ak (stone-blood) — Erythium |
| ven | vent, breath, opening | Ven-t-Warrens (breath-tunnels) |
| drak | dark, cool, dead | Drak-forge (cold forge) — an insult |
| rak | blood, ore, essence | Gor-ak (stone-blood) |
Common Phrases¶
- “Mol’gor kyr” — “Fire shapes stone.” The Emberkin equivalent of “hard work pays off.”
- “Em’rak” — “Glow-blood.” A kinship term — “my people.”
- “Drak’mol” — “Dead fire.” The worst insult in Emberkin culture. Means someone has lost their purpose.
Other Fragments¶
Sylvaelic¶
The Sylvael language is ancient and closely related to Old Auriel, but where Auriel evolved toward formality and hierarchy, Sylvaelic grew toward ecology. It has more words for types of tree, stages of growth, and qualities of soil than any other language in Kaelara. The language is partially empathic — spoken in proximity to living plants, certain words cause measurable biological responses (accelerated growth, leaf movement, root shifting). Whether this is magic or some deeper linguistic property is debated.
Key root: sylv (forest, shelter, kin) — Sylv-ael (forest-people), Sylv-aris (forest-haven).
Crisaelic¶
Not a separate language but a dialect of Sylvaelic, shattered and reformed like the Crisaels themselves. It incorporates sharp, crystalline phonemes — clicks, chimes, and resonant tones produced by vibrating their crystalline vocal structures in ways no other race can replicate. The Thousand-Petal Court has been deliberately evolving Crisaelic away from its Sylvaelic roots as an act of cultural independence.
Key root: cris (crystal, broken, reborn) — Cris-ael (crystal-people).
Ashveili¶
A tonal desert language with extensive vocabulary for wind, sand, heat, and survival. It shares some roots with Common Tavren but has diverged so far that mutual intelligibility is minimal. The Ashveils deliberately resist Imperial language standardization — speaking Ashveili in the presence of Imperial officials is a quiet act of defiance.
Key root: ash (dust, endure, sacred) — Ash-Veil (dust-wanderers).
Durathic¶
The Duralith language uses subsonic vibrations that most other races cannot hear. Duraliths “speak” partly through conventional sound and partly through low-frequency rumbles transmitted through the ground. A Duralith standing on stone can communicate with another Duralith half a mile away through foot vibrations alone. Surface-dwellers who watch two Duraliths “talking” in silence often assume they are using telepathy. They are not. They are just speaking below mortal hearing range.
Key root: dur (stone, endure, true) — Dur-alith (enduring-stone).
