Ley-Wyrm¶
Region: Global (Sky) Type: Dragon / Elemental Danger Level: ⭐⭐⭐ (Severe Threat to Airships)
Description¶
Serpentine, legless dragons that swim through the air. They feed on magic, not meat, and are often found flying along the high-altitude Leylines. Their scales shift color depending on the type of magic they last consumed — blue after arcane energy, red after fire-aspected sources, a sickly violet after feeding near Void-touched areas. They range from ten to forty meters in length, with the oldest specimens trailing luminous afterimages as they move.
Abilities¶
- Mana-Drain: A bite from a Ley-Wyrm drains magical energy, not blood.
- Prismatic Breath: Exhales a cone of raw magic that causes random effects (burn, freeze, shock).
Behavior¶
Ley-Wyrms follow the Leyline currents that crisscross the sky above Tavrenne, migrating along these invisible rivers of magic the way birds follow thermal columns. They are not aggressive toward creatures that carry no magical charge — a mundane animal or unarmed traveler could pass directly beneath one without drawing its attention. But anything radiating magical energy becomes a target. They feed by latching onto a source and draining it dry, then drifting into a sluggish torpor while they digest. Smaller Wyrms travel in loose groups of three to five, sharing a Leyline corridor. The largest ones are always solitary. They do not nest or breed in any observed pattern — new Wyrms seem to coalesce from dense Leyline intersections, forming over weeks from accumulated magical residue.
Weakness¶
- Null Zones: Areas drained of magical energy starve them. They will not enter a depleted zone willingly.
- Depleted Erythium: Spent Erythium emits a false signature that confuses their senses, used by the Armada as decoys.
Lore Context¶
The Empire classifies Ley-Wyrms as a navigational hazard. Imperial airships run on Erythium-powered engines, and a loaded cargo hold full of refined Erythium registers as a concentrated magical signature at altitude. Wyrms have learned to associate the hum of an airship engine with a meal. The Imperial Armada loses several transports a year to Wyrm attacks, particularly along the trade routes between Ironridge and Velmere. Escort ships now carry depleted Erythium decoys to lure Wyrms away from convoys. As the Covenant weakens and the Leylines grow unstable, Wyrm sightings have increased sharply — they are drawn to the erratic surges of energy that the fraying Veil produces, and their feeding is making the instability worse. Some scholars in the Imperial academies have begun to argue that the Wyrms are not parasites but a natural regulatory mechanism, thinning excess magic from overloaded Leylines. The Empire would rather shoot them down than test the theory.
Harvested Materials¶
- Prismatic Scale: Highly prized by mages for making robes.
- Ley-Gland: An organ that stores liquid magic.
