Void-Stalker¶
Region: Blackmoor Type: Monstrosity / Void-Touched Danger Level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Deadly Pack Hunter)
Description¶
Nightmarish predators that hunt in the mists of the Obsidian Marshes. They have six legs and sleek, vantablack skin that seems to absorb light. They have no eyes, sensing the world entirely through vibration and the scent of fear.
Behavior¶
Void-Stalkers are pack hunters that move in silence. They do not roar; they make a clicking sound that mimics the snapping of dry branches to disorient prey. They are drawn to high heart rates and panic.
Abilities¶
- Phase-Shift: Can turn invisible and walk through solid objects for short bursts (3-5 seconds).
- Fear-Scent: They hunt by tracking rapid heartbeats. Calmness is the only true camouflage.
- Void-Bite: Their bite inflicts necrotic rot that cannot be healed by normal magic.
Weakness¶
- Bright Light: Direct sunlight or concentrated radiance disrupts their Phase-Shift and forces them into the physical plane.
- Calmness: Their Fear-Scent tracks elevated heartbeats. A steady pulse renders a target nearly invisible to them.
Folklore¶
In Blackmoor, there is an old saying: “Fear feeds the dark.” Parents mean it literally. The first thing a Blackmoor child learns is how to breathe slow — in through the nose, out through the mouth, count to four, count to four. Not for meditation. For survival. The marshfolk call this practice “going still,” and a child who cannot do it is not allowed outside the village wards after dusk.
There is also a grim piece of folk wisdom that makes its rounds among soldiers stationed at the marsh border: “If you hear branches snapping and there are no trees, you are already being counted.”
First Encounter¶
The account that most Imperial scholars reference comes from Warden Kael Dusken, who led a six-member patrol into the deep marshes in 4A 203 to investigate livestock disappearances. Dusken was the only one who came back. His report to the garrison commander was three pages long, but the part that gets repeated is this: “We heard the clicking at sundown. Terrik panicked first. He ran. Something took him mid-stride — I did not see what. There was no sound. He was running and then he was not. I told the others to stand still. Stand still and breathe slow. Three of them managed it. Osa could not. She was shaking, and her breath was too fast, and I watched the air around her bend like heat off summer stone. I reached for her arm. My hand went through the thing standing between us. It was already there. It had been standing between us the whole time.” Dusken retired from the Wardens the following month. He reportedly never entered a dark room alone again.
Lore Context¶
