Kaelroch

The Ashen Barrens Kaelroch

Description

A land where volcanic activity once reigned supreme, now reduced to ash-choked plains and smoking fissures. The ground here is lifeless and cracked, with poisonous gases seeping through the earth. Its toxic environment and lack of arable land make it uninhabitable for most, but its volcanic resources attract daring alchemists and scavengers. The region’s instability prevents Eldara from establishing a firm presence, though they claim nominal control. Imperial agents often clash with rogue alchemists and scavengers over Cindralium deposits. The Ember Spine is seen as a cursed region, with myths warning against awakening the primordial flames.

Inhabitants

  • Emberkins: Volcanic humanoids harvesting rare materials. They live in clan-based settlements built into the caldera walls and lava tubes of the Ember Spine, where the heat that kills outsiders feels like home.
  • Scavengers & Alchemists: Mortal fortune-seekers from across the Empire, drawn by Cindralium deposits and rare volcanic compounds. Most operate out of Cinder-Gate’s shadow market or die in the ash fields. The survival rate for first-year scavengers is roughly one in four.

Key Settlements

  • Cinder-Gate: Brutal Imperial penal mining colony. The Empire’s only permanent installation in Kaelroch.
  • Crucible-Home: The largest Emberkin settlement, built inside a dormant caldera on the western face of the Ember Spine. Population fluctuates around two thousand — large by Emberkin standards. The caldera walls block the worst of the ash storms, and the residual geothermal heat keeps the settlement warm even during Snowtide. Crucible-Home is where the clan elders gather for the Soot-Moot — a seasonal council where disputes are settled, alliances formed, and alchemical knowledge shared. The settlement has no walls because nothing in Kaelroch except Emberkins would want to live there.
  • The Vent-Warrens: A network of lava tubes running beneath the eastern Ember Spine, converted into living quarters by three Emberkin clans. The tunnels are hot, cramped, and navigable only by those who can tolerate temperatures that would cook a mortal. The Vent-Warrens serve as Kaelroch’s hidden market — rare minerals, experimental alloys, and alchemical compounds change hands in the deep tunnels, beyond Imperial oversight. The Empire knows the Warrens exist but has never successfully mapped them.
  • Ash-Thorn: A small outpost on the southern edge of Kaelroch, where the volcanic terrain meets the arid border of Zarnath. Part trading post, part neutral ground. Ashveil caravans from Zarnath meet Emberkin traders here to exchange fire-resistant compounds, sungems, and alchemical supplies. It is the closest thing to a multicultural settlement in Kaelroch — a handful of mud-brick buildings, a covered market, and a tavern built from obsidian slabs. No Imperial presence. No laws beyond what the traders enforce themselves.

Mystical Features

  • The Ember Spine: A chain of dormant volcanoes containing the essence of primordial flames.
  • Obsidian Rifts: Caverns where shadows come alive and prey on explorers.

Location

East of Zarnath and south of Blackmoor. Its volcanic environment flows naturally into Zarnath’s arid expanse.
