The History of Kaelara

Detailed below are the Five Ages of the world, marking the shift from divine rule to mortal struggle.

⌛ The Timeline

1A: The Shattering Age (The God War)

  • 1A 1: The Covenari descent and the shaping of the Mortal Plane.
  • 1A 487: Malakor strikes the first blow, shattering the moon Nythra.

“The sky broke. That is the only way I can say it. The moon was there, and then it was not, and where it had been there was a wound that bled silver light across the dark. The pieces fell for three days. Some burned. Some did not. The ones that did not burn are still out there, in the deep places, and they still glow when the night is clear.” — Attributed to an unnamed Auriel star-keeper, preserved in the Archives of Velion

  • 1A 612: The Violation of the Grove. Karnath-Magar descends upon the Sylvael sacred grove in Havenwood. The surviving Sylvaels are crystallized into the first Crisaels, eventually scattering to Blackmoor and Ironridge.
  • 1A 617: The Siege of Ironridge. Ignifer and Oroth hold the line against Karnath-Magar’s legion. The mountains are permanently scarred.
  • 1A 999: The Heavens’ Covenant. Solphirion sacrifices his physical form to create the Astral Veil, ending the war and locking the gods away.

“He did not fall. I need to be clear about that. The poets will say he fell, because it sounds noble, because it fits the meter. He did not fall. He reached up. He reached up and he pulled the sky closed like a curtain, and the light that came off him was so bright it burned the shadows out of everything for a hundred miles. When I could see again, he was gone. The Veil was there instead. It has been there ever since. But sometimes, at dawn, when the light hits it right, I swear the Veil looks like hands.” — From the oral tradition of the Duraliths, recorded in stone-script on the inner walls of the Whispering Wall

2A: The Age of Reclamation (The Rebuilding)

  • 2A 3: Mortals are left alone for the first time. Early independent kingdoms form in Velmere and Greystone.
  • 2A 212: The First Cities. Construction of early stone settlements. The first usage of arcane magic by mortals.
  • 2A 850: Tensions rise between the Auriel kingdoms and the independent tribes of Caldrith and Ironridge.

3A: The Age of Conquest (The Rise of Empire)

“I was at Redfall when Kaelith came through. I was fourteen. My father sold leather to the army, and I carried the bundles. I did not see a god. I saw a tired man on a tired horse with a hammer too big for his back. He stopped at our stall and paid for the leather himself, coin by coin, from a pouch he kept on his belt. My father said later that any man who pays his own debts is worth following. We followed. Half the valley did.” — Excerpt from “A Tanner’s Son,” anonymous memoir, dated approximately 3A 20

  • 3A 47: Construction of Valtharion. The first floating district is raised using leftover divine magic.
  • 3A 237: The Magocracy Wars. Mages attempt to replace the Emperors. A secret society of mage-supremacists forms, calling itself the Thousand-Petal Court. In later centuries, Crisael leadership co-opts the organization, transforming it from an academic conspiracy into a revolutionary spiritual movement.

4A: The Age of Empires (The Golden Era)

  • 4A 12: Industrialization of Erythium mining in Ironridge by the newly formed Iron-Guilds.

“The mountain is alive. I do not mean this the way the scholars mean it, with their talk of Leylines and ambient resonance. I mean I put my hand on the rock and it was warm. I could feel it humming under my palm like a sleeping animal. The first vein we cracked — the Erythium ran through it like blood in a body, bright red, pulsing. Mal said we should stop. I said we could not afford to stop. We had families. We had debts. So we dug. We have been digging ever since. The mountain has not woken up. But some nights, in the deep shafts, I hear it breathing.” — Torven Grail, founding member of the Iron-Guilds, dictated account, 4A 14

  • 4A 500: The Empire reaches its zenith. Trade routes like the Golden Path are fully established.

5A: The Current Age (The Age of Silence)

  • 5A 4: The “Fading” begins. Magic starts to become less potent.
  • 5A 853 (Present Day): The Covenant is weakening.
    • The Tearing: Cracks appear in the sky above the Obsidian Marshes.
    • The Whispers: People near the Veil report hearing the Severith again.

“It started with the dogs. They would not stop barking at the sky. Then the birds left. All of them, in one morning, like someone had called them somewhere else. Then we heard it — not words, not exactly, but something that wanted to be words. Like a voice pressed against glass, trying to push through. My daughter asked me what the sky was saying. I told her it was just the wind. She looked at me the way children look at you when they know you are lying. She said, ‘The wind does not have a mouth.’” — Recorded testimony of Edda Marsh, farmer, Blackmoor province, 5A 851

⚔️ Famous Battles

The Siege of Ironridge (Shattering Age)

  • Combatants: Ignifer & Oroth vs. Karnath-Magar.
  • Outcome: Victory for the Covenari, but the region was twisted into jagged peaks. The Siege of Ironridge
  • Relic: The Sun-Forge Hammer was left behind here.

The Fall of the First City (Shattering Age)

  • Outcome: Total annihilation. The city was “deleted” from history. Only the Archives of Velion remember it existed.
