Geode-Golem

Region: Ironridge Type: Elemental / Beast Danger Level: ⭐⭐ (Territorial When Provoked)

Description

Hulking, crab-like tortoises with shells made of raw ore and crystal. They are often mistaken for boulders until they move. Duraliths farm them for the precious gems that grow on their backs. A mature specimen can weigh several tons, and the crystalline formations on its shell shift in color depending on the mineral composition of the terrain it inhabits.

Abilities

  • Shell-Down: Can retract into its shell, becoming virtually invulnerable to physical damage.
  • Crystal-Spike: Can shoot shards of crystal from its shell as a ranged attack.

Behavior

Geode-Golems are slow, solitary grazers that feed on mineral deposits and Leyline runoff. They migrate along underground Erythium veins, following paths that shift as the Leylines fluctuate. During feeding, they anchor themselves to exposed rock faces and remain motionless for days, absorbing trace minerals through their underbellies. They reproduce by budding — a smaller shell formation breaks off the parent’s back over the course of several months and eventually detaches as a juvenile. Geode-Golems are not territorial toward other creatures, but two males in proximity during a budding cycle will ram each other until one withdraws. When threatened, they retract and wait. Most predators give up.

Weakness

  • Exposed Underbelly: When flipped, their soft underside is vulnerable to piercing weapons.
  • Sustained Heat: Prolonged exposure to intense fire softens the mineral bonds in their shell.

Lore Context

The Iron-Guilds harvest Geode-Golem shells on an industrial scale. Guild-contracted trappers herd them into corrals near major mine shafts, where Spark-Wrights shear the crystalline growths for use in machinery and enchantment cores. The Duraliths, who have coexisted with these creatures for centuries, view the practice with quiet resentment — they consider the golems kin to the stone itself, not livestock. As the Leylines weaken with the fraying of the Covenant, Geode-Golems have been surfacing more frequently, drawn upward toward stronger magical currents closer to the surface. Miners report finding them in active tunnels now, blocking shafts and disrupting operations. The Guilds call it a pest problem. The Duraliths call it a warning.

Harvested Materials

  • Raw Erythium: Small quantities can be mined from their shells.
  • Geode-Heart: A pulsating crystal used in heavy machinery.
