The Imperial Military Structure¶
1. The Silver Legion (The Sword of the Empire)¶
“One Shield. One Soul. One Emperor.”
The backbone of the Empire’s might. The Silver Legion is not a conscript army, but a professional force of career soldiers trained from adolescence in the Academy of War in Valtharion.
- Aesthetic: Burnished silver plate armor, red cloaks, towering rectangular shields.
- Tactics: Phalanx formations, absolute discipline, and the use of “Sun-Spears” (enchanted pikes that glow with heat).
- Leadership: Grand Marshal Valerius Thorne. A scarred Auriel veteran who believes order is more important than morality.
2. The Justiciar Order (The Eye of the Empire)¶
“Truth cuts deeper than steel.”
The state inquisitors and secret police. They answer only to the Throne and operate extrajudicial courts outside the normal legal system. Their duty is to hunt down:
- Rogue Mages (Those succumbing to Veil-Sickness).
- Traitors (Rebels and seditionists).
-
Heretics (Worshippers of the Severith).
-
Aesthetic: Black leather and steel, face-covering masks (to strip their identity), dual blades.
- Reputation: Feared by all. Even nobility drop their gaze when a Justiciar walks into a room.
- Headquarters: The Onyx Citadel (a floating fortress above Valtharion, but below the Palace).
3. The Imperial Armada (The Wings of the Empire)¶
“The Sky is ours.”
The fleet of airships that ensures Eldara’s dominance over trade and travel. Heavily reliant on Tirael navigators and Erythium engines. Every Armada vessel is built as a dual-role hull — capable of both flight and seafaring. Void-Combustion engines burn Erythium dust to achieve lift, but fuel is finite and resupply depends on the Iron-Guilds. When Erythium runs low or engines need cooling, ships lower into the water and sail conventionally. In practice, most Armada patrols spend as much time on the waves as in the sky, reserving flight for tactical advantage in battle and rapid repositioning. This dependency on Erythium is the Iron-Guilds’ greatest leverage over the Empire — and the Armada’s greatest vulnerability.
- Flagship: The Dawn’s Hammer (A massive dreadnought capable of leveling cities).
- Role: Patrol trade routes, transport legions, and provide aerial bombardment. Engage hostile fleets at sea when flight is not viable.
Relations¶
- Iron-Guilds: The Armada’s dependency on Erythium fuel gives the Guilds enormous leverage. The military resents this but cannot build airships without Guild-supplied ore and artificers.
- Crimson Compact: Open hostility at sea, cold war on land. The Compact raids Imperial shipping lanes and the Armada hunts their vessels in return. The Silver Legion has standing orders to arrest Compact agents on sight.
- Thousand-Petal Court: The Justiciars treat the Court as their primary target. Decades of failed raids into the Obsidian Marshes have made this a bitter, personal conflict for the Order.
